Avich & Kilchrenan Site Map:
Churches and Chapels
About 3.5 miles south of Dalavich lies Kilmaha where on a small peninsula jutting out into Loch Awe is the early Celtic church site of Kilmaha where some interesting old carved stones can be found. Another early Christian site was at Annat, now essentially part of Kilchrenan. There was also a Free Church at Kilchrenan which was used for services until 1939. The Church and Manse were eventually amalgamated into a private dwelling now known as the West Manse. The ruined chapel on Inishail has been mentioned in the previous section.
There are two Churches currently in use in the community, namely Dalavich Church and Kilchrenan Parish Church which are now amalgamated with Muckairn, the Taynuilt Parish Church. |

Dalavich Church is a small, simple but nonetheless handsome building close to the shores of the Loch with white-washed walls dating from around 1770. It is surrounded by an old walled graveyard which contains some interesting tombstones. The Church has a fine stained glass window in memory of a Mr. Macpherson, a schoolmaster from Ardchonnell (on the opposite side of the Loch) who died early last century. |

Kilchrenan Church goes back over 600 years but the charming existing building, with neatly buttressed white-washed walls, was built in its present form also about 1770 ( the parishes of Dalavich and Kilchrenan were united in 1661) with substantial interior refurbishment in 1908. However, a 13th Century dog-toothed carved stone, relic of an earlier building probably on this site is incorporated into each gable end. |

The old part of the graveyard adjacent to the Church possesses some very old, interesting and impressive tombstones, particularly on its northerly side. |

There is also a memorial here to the renowned Cailean Mor, ( Big Colin!) of the great Clan Campbell, who met his death in battle with the MacDougalls ( led by Cailean Beag of Cuilreoch) on the String of Lorn, west of Dalavich in 1264. History records his internment here although his exact burial place is unknown but the slab was erected in 1866 at the instigation of his descendant George, 8th Duke of Argyll.
The denomination is The Church of Scotland. There is a Catholic Church in Taynuilt but you may have to go a wee bit further to find a Mosque, Synagogue or Temple. |
